Looking at SNAP Redemption

Purchases made by lower-income Americans continue to increase at farmers markets and other farm-to-retail venues[1] (i.e. farm stands, Community Supported Agriculture, mobile markets). In two years, redemptions of SNAP benefits (i.e. food stamps) at farmers markets nearly doubled, increasing from $11.7 million in 2011 to $21.1 million in 2013. Since 2004, when SNAP benefits shifted from paper to a debit-card style benefit, the value of SNAP redemptions at farmers markets increased by 400%. These expansions follow leadership from policymakers and non-profit partners at the local, state, and national levels.
